Goodyear Visits The Cobblestone District

With all of the latest conversations taking place as to what Buffalo will ever do with the parking-lot sprawl dilemma, I was excited to hear that Goodyear Tire was taking full advantage of the city's excess asphalt. About 45 minutes before the Frank Lloyd Boathouse groundbreaking ceremony this morning, I received an urgent phone call. Someone on the other end of the line was telling me to get down to the Cobblestone District STAT. So I hurried down to see for myself what was going on.

It turns out that Goodyear Tire had set up a small obstacle course along Mississippi Street in order to test out their new tires. They had a Goodyear tent set up, along with hoses to water down sections of the track in order to test out rain conditions. Every couple of minutes a car would come screeching around a corner before zooming past a few interested onlookers (mostly neighboring plant workers). This is the second year in a row that the Goodyear team has set up the test track in the Cobblestone District... it's too bad that they don't let the public know about it in advance as it might be a great promotion for their tires.

why are we speaking positively about our parking lots. I personally think its unfortunate that Goodyear is able to find a place so close to the heart of the city where they can test their tires. Hopefully someday we will see development swallow those parking lots.

Jim, I referenced the "With all of the latest conversations taking place" as a red flag that nothing is being done about our over abundance of parking lots. Until our 'powers that be' realize that we have too much parking in Buffalo I see no problem with turning the ones that we do have into public attractions. Race tracks, roller blading rinks, farmers' markets... whatever. I am with you, let's build on 'em every chance we get... until then there is nothing worse than a big 'ol empty lot.
